Blake Lively is known for many things: her iconic role as Serena van der Woodsen in Gossip Girl, her adorable marriage to Ryan Reynolds, her impeccable fashion sense, and her impressive acting chops. But one thing she is not known for is drinking alcohol.
The 35-year-old actress has been vocal about being a non-drinker for years, saying that she does not like the effects of alcohol and that she feels better sober. She has also claimed to be an “amazing mixologist” despite not drinking, and has launched a line of non-alcoholic mixers called Betty Buzz in 2021.
So, imagine the surprise and confusion of her fans when she announced on Instagram that she is releasing a line of alcoholic beverages under the same brand name, Betty Booze. The name is likely inspired by her and Reynolds’ 3-year-old daughter, Betty. They also share daughters James, 8, and Inez, 6, and welcomed their fourth baby in February. They’ve kept the name and sex of their newest family member private.
“Drinking isn’t my thing. But for f* sake, flavor is,” Lively wrote in her caption, along with a photo of her serving cans of her sparkling cocktail brand. “Homemade recipes. Real fruit. Real ingredients. Quality booze. No crap. Also a real time saver. Which is why I really did it.”
The brand offers three flavors: Sparkling Bourbon with Apple Ginger Sour Cherry, Sparkling Tequila with Oak Smoked Lemonade, and Sparking Tequila with Lime Shiso. Lively claimed that the drinks are made with real fruit, fresh herbs and spices, and a bit of sparkling water for a refreshing sip.
But instead of getting cheers from her followers, Lively got jeers from critics who accused her of being hypocritical, dishonest, and insensitive for promoting an alcohol brand when she does not drink herself.
“If drinking isn’t your thing… how do you know if it tastes correct or good?” one commenter asked.
“I don’t get why you would promote alcohol if you don’t drink. So you can serve them to others at parties? Very odd choice,” another wrote.
“So she’s smart enough not to drink alcohol but wants people to spend their $ on alcohol so she can get richer?” someone jabbed.
“First @jlo and now Blake Lively, ridiculous all these celebs who don’t even drink selling alcohol just to make a buck,” another added, referring to Jennifer Lopez’s launch of her alcohol brand Delola this year despite also being sober.
Some fans also expressed their disappointment that Lively did not launch non-alcoholic cocktails instead, which would have been more aligned with her personal choice and more inclusive for those who do not drink or struggle with alcoholism.
“How can you market/create a product you don’t openly consume yourself? come the f on now,” an angry fan wrote.
“Really tired of celebs milking alcoholism,” another lamented.
Lively has not responded to the backlash yet, but it seems that her boozy venture has left a bitter taste in many people’s mouths. Perhaps she should stick to what she does best: acting, fashion, and being a mom.
